Most people suggest about 2 million. But the total number is actually irrelevant. What is relevant is how many are actively using it, writing, meeting people, travelling, attending conferences, and hosting Esperantists in their countries or even their homes. Their enthusiasm means a lot and even one person in a city you visit who is happy to meet you and share a conversation with you and perhaps give you some advice about the locality is a wonderful benefit. Usually its possible to find someone who even has the same interests as you, (whether its computers, gardening, humanities, religion, linguistics) so meeting them has even more meaning for you.
